Abstract
In the Romanesque epic one only finds small sketches of landscapes, but these nevertheless exert a very important expressive function which is inextricably linked to the action. Sometimes the description goes a little bit further. In the Cantar de Mio Cid (Song of My Lord) the impressive vision of the oak grove of Corpes is used to suggest the impression of solitude and terror. Emotion grows when we focus on the luminous Mediterranean landscape where the jongleur describes one of the most successful settings of an artistic landscape. Even though the Song of Roland, with its proverbial geographical fantasy, seems to go in the opposite direction, we find the descriptions similar. The description of the land of Chernubles acquires dark accents which captivate the reader through their elaborate compositions. The episode, full of biblical references which portend the death of Roland, is no different. But without a doubt, the most beautiful description corresponds to the episode of Baligant whose troops arrive at the Spanish lands. In aforementioned cases, the description exceeds the limit of pure reference and takes on a series of emotive connotations, evident proof of the intention of a poet who hopes to invigorate his Song.
